Practicing the Prayer-Filled Life

This week in worship we talked about prayer. A copy of the sermon is posted on the website along with some additional prayer exercises to try. We hope you will use this blog to share some of the ways you are praying this week and some of your experiences or insights. Some of us were talking about prayer last night and one of the things we talked about is what happens when you pray on your knees or prostrate (lying face down) or standing with your arms raised (the traditional Jewish way of prayer that Jesus would have been familiar with)? Does what we do with our body make a difference in how we pray?

I don't feel that my position affects my prayer; rather, my position greatly REFLECTS my attitude and intention of prayer. For example, in my most humble moments such as confession of sin, I am usually prostrate; but when I am in a prayer of worship, my arms and head are typically lifted up. I guess it's a matter of what is in my heart at the time...but it is my prayer that dictates and impacts my position, not the other way around.

The Middle Schoolers have been experimenting with Prayer Postures each week at Bible Study. They are invited to choose whatever posture allows them to be open to God. We've been talking about what it might mean to have your hands lifted high during prayer or open on your lap... After one recent prayer time, Alyssa commented - "Wow, did you feel that?"
